CLIENT: VANCOUVER SCHOOL DISTRICT
STAGE: COMPLETE
DESIGN WITH: JONATHAN LOSEE LTD.
LOCATION: VANCOUVER, BC
Our design for this school ground channelled its supernatural location next to the spectacular temperate rainforest of Pacific Spirit Park. The goal: to transform the natural systems of the school’s surroundings into opportunities for play and learning. On rainy days, a system allows kids to follow rainwater from the rooftop, through the playgrounds, out to a biofiltration swale and eventually into the park. When the sun shines, a human sundial reveals itself. The biofiltration swale doubles as usable teaching and curriculum space, bringing the dream of this design full circle—education in nature, and nature as educator.
