Laura Secord Elementary boasts something unexpected for a school with very limited field space: outsized achievements in track and field. So with the goal of creating more usable play space on a very small site and with a limited PAC budget, we took inspiration from this and ran with it. The simple act of adding waves and slight undulations to the track transformed it to double as a play feature. A small concrete amphitheatre doubles as a warm-up and training zone. Today, on a site that previously saw kids only using a fraction of the space, kids spread all across the schoolyard enjoying creative—and highly active— play.
